How I handle your information

Who I am
Answer Key is a trading name of Andrew Carmichael, a sole trader based in the UK. I'm responsible for the personal information described here. You can contact me at contact@answerkey.co.uk.
This website
This site uses no cookies, analytics or tracking. It's hosted by Cloudflare, which processes technical information such as your IP address to deliver the site and protect it from attacks.
What I collect and why
- When you contact me: your name, work email, company and anything you include in your message. I use this to reply and, if you ask, to provide a quote or a chat check. This is in my legitimate interest in responding to enquiries, or a step towards a contract you've asked for.
- When I contact businesses: I sometimes email businesses about a check I've carried out, using a named contact's work details from public sources such as the company's website. This is in my legitimate interest in offering a relevant service to that business. You can ask me to stop at any time, and I'll keep a note so I don't contact you again.
- When you're a client: contact and billing details, and records of the work, to deliver the service and meet tax and accounting rules. This is needed for our contract and to meet my legal obligations.
Client data I process on your behalf
For paid work, clients may share support content or anonymised chat records with me. I process that information only on the client's instructions, under a written data processing agreement. The client remains responsible for it, and their own privacy notice applies.
Who I share information with
I don't sell personal information. I use a small number of service providers to run the business, each under contract:
- Email provider, to send and receive email
- Cloudflare, to host this website
- Business AI services, to analyse and draft content for client work, on terms that stop them using the data to train their models
- An accountant, if needed for tax purposes
Some of these providers process information outside the UK. Where they do, I rely on UK-approved safeguards, such as adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.
How long I keep it
- Enquiries that don't lead to work: up to 12 months
- Client and billing records: 6 years after the work ends, to meet tax rules
- Requests not to be contacted: kept for as long as needed to respect them
Your rights
You can ask to see the information I hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, or object to how I use it, including any marketing. Email contact@answerkey.co.uk and I'll respond within one month.
If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
